Compatibility issues between some Faronics products & backup software

Issue

Customers running Faronics products may notice issues with some backup software when attempting to perform system level backups of machines running Faronics products.

Problem

The problem with pulling a system level backup of a device running Faronics products arises when the systems are configured with either a ThawSpace or a StorageSpace used to retain data on the client system across multiple reboots when Deep Freeze is enabled. The ThawSpace and StorageSpace are virtual disk volumes that are represented by a host file on the disk that is then mounted with either a existing disk volume, or on an existing path on the local machine.

Due to the way that this file is mounted it cannot be accessed by other applications or services, resulting in an issue with backup software that attempts to access these files to perform a backup process.

Workaround

To workaround the issue Faronics recommends that customers exempt both the host files for the StorageSpace and ThawSpace installed on the local machine. This would include the following files;
  • C:\PERSI0.DSK
  • C:\FSS0.DSK
  • C:\even~gs.dsk
  • C:\FssFAVE.dsk

Known Solutions Impacted

Faronics has been made aware of the following backup products that have been impacted by this issue;
  • Symantec Backup Exec
  • Barracuda Backup
  • Microsoft DPM
